Sound Sleep: A Therapist's Guide to Understanding and Improving Sleep

CE Hours 1

About this course

This 1-hour continuing education course provides mental health professionals with psychoeducation on sleep science, common sleep disorders, and evidence-based interventions. Clinicians will learn to distinguish normal sleep architecture from sleep pathology, understand the diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder and obstructive sleep apnea, and apply the two-process model of sleep regulation in clinical practice. The course covers practical behavioral interventions including sleep restriction principles, stimulus control techniques, and cognitive strategies for managing sleep-related anxiety. Through this experiential learning approach, mental health professionals experience sleep psychoeducation "as if they are the client," enabling them to better educate clients about sleep hygiene myths, appropriate treatment pathways, and self-management strategies. Participants will gain competence in identifying when sleep studies are indicated versus when self-report assessment is sufficient, and will learn to differentiate insomnia from insufficient sleep opportunity and environmental sleep disruption.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the stages of sleep on a hypnogram and explain what constitutes normal versus abnormal sleep architecture.
  • Describe the diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder including frequency, duration, and daytime impairment requirements.
  • Explain the two-process model of sleep regulation including sleep drive (adenosine) and the circadian clock.
  • List evidence-based behavioral strategies for increasing sleep drive and managing hyperarousal during sleep difficulties.

Learning Levels

  • Beginner

Target Audience

This course is designed for licensed mental health professionals (psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists) who work with clients experiencing sleep difficulties and want to provide evidence-based psychoeducation about sleep disorders and behavioral interventions. The course is also valuable for clinicians who want to better understand when to refer clients for specialized sleep treatment (such as CBT-I or sleep studies) versus when to provide basic sleep education and self-management strategies.
