Peace from Picking & Pulling: Assessment and Treatment of Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors

CE Hours 1

About this course

This continuing education course provides mental health professionals with evidence-based knowledge for understanding and treating body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), including trichotillomania and excoriation disorder. Clinicians will learn to differentiate BFRBs from related conditions such as OCD and self-harm, understand the neurobiological and psychological factors that contribute to these behaviors, and apply the Comprehensive Behavioral Model (COM-B) using the SCAMP framework (Sensory, Cognitive, Affective, Motor, Place) in clinical practice. The course covers assessment strategies, self-monitoring techniques, and evidence-based intervention tools that therapists can immediately implement with clients. Participants will gain competence in identifying patterns within BFRB episodes and selecting appropriate behavioral interventions tailored to individual client presentations. Presented in an accessible, client-facing format, this course allows clinicians to experience psychoeducational content as their clients would, deepening therapeutic empathy while building clinical expertise.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the distinguishing characteristics of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) and differentiate them from related conditions including OCD, self-harm, and habitual behaviors.
  • Apply the Comprehensive Behavioral Model (COM-B) and SCAMP framework to analyze client BFRB episodes by identifying sensory, cognitive, affective, motor, and place components.
  • Select evidence-based intervention tools and strategies that correspond to specific SCAMP domains to address client-specific BFRB presentations in clinical practice.

Learning Levels

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate

Licensed mental health professionals (psychologists, LCSWs, LPCs, LMFTs, psychiatric nurses) at all experience levels. No prior BFRB training required. Ideal for clinicians seeking practical, evidence-based tools for assessing and treating hair pulling, skin picking, and related behaviors.

In this role, she provided individual and group therapy for anxiety and anxiety-related disorders and delivered manualized CBT interventions as part of an NIH-funded clinical research study examining the neurocircuit mechanisms of OCD. After relocating to California, she worked within a large health system and a tech-based corporate wellness center before establishing her private practice.

She is a certified graduate of the Trichotillomania Learning Center’s Professional Training Institute for Trichotillomania and Related Behaviors, as well as the International OCD Foundation’s Behavior Therapy Training Institute for OCD. She also holds a Certification in Perinatal Mental Health from Postpartum Support International.
